Mutual of Enumclaw works exclusively with local independent agents to offer insurance products for individuals, families, farms, and businesses. We currently operate in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Arizona, Montana and Wyoming.



The Commercial Lines Underwriting Manager will effectively manage the underwriting and rating staff with an eye toward increasing their overall knowledge base, sales skills, and technical competencies. Effectively manage agency assignments to consistently exceed goals. Significantly contribute to the development, implementation and execution of strategic initiatives, as well as annual and long range premiums and business plans. Develops programs, policies and underwriting decisions that positively impact the department and the organization.


This position reports to our Vice President of Commercial Lines and will work remotely, must be located in Washington, Oregon or Idaho.


Potential Bonus 10%

  • Ensure the implementation, execution, and monitoring of underwriting policies and procedures with particular focus on risk selection, loss analysis and pricing.
  • Consistently seeks out ways to drive both profit and growth results.
  • Ensures compliance and quality standards and regulatory authorities.
  • Identifies and implements automation and continuous process improvement changes.
  • Frequently review staffing plans to ensure they support the attainment of objectives.
  • Reinforce strategy with staff, colleagues and external audiences.
  • Develop new book and account monitoring tools.
  • Promote effective communication among and between different work groups.
  • Serve as an industry subject matter expert. Keep abreast of developments in the industry and disseminate relevant information.
  • Serve as a technical expert, exercising technical authority with regards to all major lines of business.
  • Employ strong analytics and sound judgment when making decisions and monitoring results.
  • Communicate pertinent information to management, along with well-reasoned, meaningful recommendations.
  • Exhibit high levels of teamwork, leadership, initiative, and persistence.
  • Record of accomplishment in building relationships with associates and agents.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that underwriters serve as highly effective, result driven associates.
  • Proven developer of talent. Successful at mentoring and coaching for high performance.
  • Experience with remote management.
  • Advise staff on administrative policies and procedures, technical problems, priorities, and methods.
  • Drive a culture that promotes collaboration, diversity, and inclusion.



Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent decision-making, leadership and organizational skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Limited travel.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Insurance, Risk management, Mathematics, Statistics, Finance, Economics or Business preferred; or equivalent experience.
  • 10+ years of progressive underwriting experience with at least 5 years managing underwriters.
  • Designations such as CPCU, CIC or ARM preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work at a desk or office for a prolonged period of time.
